About Marriage POAs

A marriage power of attorney in Dubai and other emirates of the UAE enables the father or legal guardian of the bride to designate a different person to act on his behalf throughout the marriage registration process. Any person over the age of 21 may be chosen to represent the bride's father/legal guardian before the court. This is why a marriage POA is crucial when the bride's father/legal guardian lives outside the UAE and is unable to attend the wedding ceremonies.

Your questions answered

Here are answers to the most commonly asked questions about Marriage POA.

A Marriage POA is a legal document that allows the bride’s father or legal guardian to authorize another adult male to represent him before the Sharia Court for concluding the marriage contract. This POA is typically used when the bride’s guardian is abroad or unable to attend the marriage proceedings in person.

Yes. UAE Sharia Courts legally accept Marriage POAs when properly drafted, notarized, and attested. However, the content must strictly comply with Islamic legal standards and court requirements, especially in Muslim marriages.

A foreign-issued POA must be:

  • Notarized locally in the issuing country

  • Attested by the UAE Embassy in that country

  • Attested by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA)

  • Legally translated into Arabic by a certified translator in the UAE

In Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court, non-Muslim residents may use a POA to authorize someone to represent them in a civil marriage. The POA must be notarized, specific in purpose, and accepted by the court in advance.

The order of priority for a wali is:

  • Father

  • Paternal grandfather

  • Brother

  • Paternal uncle

  • Adult male cousin
If none are available, a Sharia judge can be appointed as the wali.
